What Is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is a prescription weight loss injection containing tirzepatide. It's the newest of the three main weight loss injections available in the UK and, in clinical trials, it's shown the strongest results.
It works by targeting two hormones at once - GIP and GLP-1 - that control appetite and blood sugar. Most other weight loss injections only target one. That dual action is what sets Mounjaro apart and why the weight loss tends to be more significant. In the largest clinical trial (SURMOUNT-1), participants lost an average of 22.5% of their body weight over 72 weeks. That's roughly a third more than Wegovy and nearly three times more than Saxenda.
It's a weekly injection you administer yourself at home using a pre-filled pen. Simple, takes about 30 seconds.

- You're 18 or over
- Your BMI is 30 or above, or
- Your BMI is 27 or above with a weight-related condition

Side Effects
Common: Nausea (usually settles), reduced appetite, diarrhoea or constipation, stomach discomfort, tiredness in the first week or two.
Important: GLP-1 medications can affect absorption of the contraceptive pill. Your pharmacist will discuss alternatives if relevant.

Treatment Comparison

No. Our pharmacists can prescribe these treatments directly through Patient Group Directions (PGDs). Your GP doesn't need to be involved unless you'd like them to be.
Most patients start noticing changes within the first 4 to 6 weeks. Significant weight loss typically happens over 3 to 6 months as the dosage gradually increases.
The most common side effects are nausea, reduced appetite, and digestive discomfort. These are usually mild and tend to ease off as your body adjusts to the medication. Your pharmacist will talk you through what to expect.
In most cases, yes. But there are some interactions to be aware of, particularly with oral contraceptives and diabetes medication. Your pharmacist will review everything you're currently taking before prescribing.
