Brazil is vast, and the health risks vary massively depending on where you’re headed. Rio and Sao Paulo have different risks to the Amazon, and Yellow Fever requirements change depending on the region. 

Brazil requires a Yellow Fever certificate for entry to certain areas, and the range of recommended vaccines is broader than many travellers expect.

Malaria Information 


Present in the Amazon basin and some northern states. Very low risk in coastal cities and the south. Antimalarials recommended for Amazon travel. 

Travel Health Tips

  • Yellow Fever card: Carry it with your passport. You may be asked at internal checkpoints. 
  • Mosquitoes: Dengue, Zika and malaria all present depending on region. DEET is essential. 
  • Water: Tap water in major cities is treated but bottled is safer. Elsewhere, always bottled. 
  • Sun: Brazil straddles the equator. Sun protection is critical even on overcast days. 
  • Safety: Keep valuables hidden. Don’t carry your passport around.
