Thailand is one of the most popular long-haul destinations from the UK, and for good reason. But between the street food, the temples and the islands, there are genuine health risks that a few simple vaccinations can prevent.
Whether you’re backpacking through the north, island-hopping down south, or doing a fortnight in Phuket, here’s what you should get sorted before you go.
Vaccine Table
Estimated total cost: £340 – £720
| Vaccine | Status | Doses | Price/Dose | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hepatitis A | Recommended | 1 | £75 | Spread through contaminated food and water. High risk in Thailand. |
| Hepatitis B | Recommended | 3 | £55 | Spread through bodily fluids. Worth considering for longer stays. |
| Hep A & B (combined) | Alternative | 3-4 | £90 | Covers both in one course if you need protection for each. |
| Typhoid | Recommended | 1 | £45 | Spread through contaminated food/water, especially street food. |
| Rabies | Recommended | 2 | £90 | Present in dogs, monkeys and bats. Strongly recommended for rural areas or temples. |
| Japanese Encephalitis | Consider | 2 | £130 | Mosquito-borne. Risk increases in rural areas and during rainy season (May-Oct). |
| Cholera | Consider | 2 | £42 | Low risk for most but worth discussing if visiting remote areas. |
| DTP | Check | 1 | £45 | Make sure your routine boosters are up to date. |
Malaria Information
Low in most tourist areas. Some risk in rural and border regions (particularly near Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia). Your pharmacist will advise whether antimalarial tablets are needed based on your specific itinerary.
Travel Health Tips
- Food and water: Stick to bottled water, avoid ice in drinks from street stalls, and eat food that’s freshly cooked and served hot.
- Mosquitoes: Dengue is a real risk, especially during rainy season. Use DEET-based repellent, cover up at dawn and dusk.
- Sun: Factor 50, reapply after swimming. It’s closer to the equator than you think.
- Animals: Don’t touch stray dogs or monkeys. Rabies is present and a bite needs immediate medical attention.
- Health kit: Pack paracetamol, rehydration sachets, antihistamines, plasters, and prescription medication.
