Travel Vaccinations for Turkey

Turkey is one of the most popular holiday destinations for UK travellers — Antalya, Bodrum, Marmaris, Istanbul, Cappadocia. For a standard package holiday on the coast, the vaccine list is short. But Turkey is a big country, and risks rise sharply if you’re heading inland, into rural areas, or doing longer independent trips.
For most travellers, making sure routine boosters are up to date and adding Hepatitis A is enough. If you’re staying longer, eating widely, or going off the tourist trail, the list grows.
Vaccine Table
Estimated total cost: £75 – £325 (depending on travel style and duration)
| Vaccine | Status | Doses | Price/Dose | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hepatitis A | Recommended | 1 | £75 | Standard recommendation, even for resort holidays. Spread through food and water. |
| Hepatitis B | Consider | 3 | £55 | Worth having for longer stays, medical tourism, or if you might need treatment locally. |
| Typhoid | Consider | 1 | £45 | Recommended for longer stays, rural travel, or if you're eating widely outside resorts. |
| Rabies | Consider | 2 | £90 | Stray dogs are common across Turkey. Worth discussing for rural areas, hiking trips, or longer stays. |
| Diphtheria, Tetanus & Polio | Check | 1 | £45 | Make sure your routine boosters are up to date. |
Malaria Information
Malaria risk: No significant malaria risk for travellers to Turkey. Antimalarials are not required.
Other mosquito-borne infections (West Nile virus, occasional cases of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever in rural eastern regions) are worth knowing about but rare in tourist areas. Bite prevention is the only routine precaution.
When to Get Vaccinated
2-4 weeks before – Plenty of time for the standard list.
Less than 2 weeks – Hep A is single-dose and still effective. Call us.
Travel Health Tips for Turkey
- Food: Turkish food is one of the highlights of the trip. Eat at busy places with high turnover. Be more cautious with street food in summer heat and in less touristy areas. Avoid salads washed in tap water outside major hotels.
- Water: Bottled is safest, even in cities. Tap water is treated but quality varies. Avoid ice in drinks from street vendors.
- Sun: Mediterranean and Aegean coasts get extreme heat in July and August. Heatstroke is a real risk, especially for sightseeing in Istanbul or at ancient sites. Drink constantly, wear a hat, and rest in shade during the hottest hours.
- Hot springs and ancient sites: Turkey has incredible thermal pools and ruins. Wear footwear that grips on wet stone. Cuts and grazes on stone get infected — clean and cover them.
- Stray animals: Cats are everywhere and mostly harmless. Stray dogs are more of a concern, particularly in rural areas. Don’t approach or feed them.
