Travel Health Checklist: What to Do Before You Fly

Packing is the easy bit. Here’s the health stuff you should sort before you leave.

6-8 weeks before: Check what vaccines you need. Start multi-dose courses. Get a malaria risk assessment if going to Africa/South Asia/Central America. Check routine vaccinations are current.

4 weeks before: Get single-dose vaccines (Hep A, Typhoid, Yellow Fever). Start Mefloquine if prescribed. Fill regular prescriptions with enough for the full trip plus spares.

2 weeks before: Last chance for most vaccines. Start Malarone/Doxycycline if prescribed. Check travel insurance covers medical treatment and evacuation.

Pack: DEET 50%, SPF 50 sunscreen, rehydration sachets, paracetamol, antihistamines, plasters, anti-diarrhoea medication, prescription meds in original packaging, insect bite cream, hand sanitiser.

Day of travel: Vaccination records and Yellow Fever cert in hand luggage. Prescription meds in hand luggage. Set antimalarial reminder.

After return: Continue antimalarials for recommended period. Watch for fever or unusual symptoms. Tell your doctor where you’ve been if you feel unwell.
