Cancun, Mexico City, the Riviera Maya – Mexico is one of the easiest long-haul trips from Birmingham with direct flights running regularly. Most travellers heading to resort areas face relatively low health risks, but a couple of key vaccinations are still worth getting.

The risk level depends heavily on where you’re going. A fortnight in an all-inclusive in Cancun is very different from backpacking through Chiapas.

  • Water: Stick to bottled, even in hotels. Ice is generally safe in tourist areas.
  • Food: Mexico’s food is brilliant. Eat where the locals eat, avoid anything sitting out.

  • Mosquitoes: Dengue present in some areas. Repellent and covering up in evenings.
  • Altitude: Mexico City sits at 2,200m. Some people feel it for the first day or two.
