Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti, Zanzibar. Tanzania has some of the most iconic destinations in Africa. Like neighbouring Kenya, it comes with genuine health risks that need proper preparation. 

Yellow Fever certification is required if arriving from an endemic country, and malaria is present throughout.

Malaria Information 


High throughout Tanzania, including Zanzibar and safari regions. Antimalarial tablets are strongly recommended. Altitude above 1,800m reduces risk slightly but doesn’t eliminate it. 

Travel Health Tips

  • Altitude: If climbing Kilimanjaro, acclimatisation is critical. Acute mountain sickness is common above 3,000m. Talk to your pharmacist about Diamox. 
  • Mosquitoes: DEET, nets, long clothing. Non-negotiable in Tanzania.
  • Water and food: Bottled water only. Be cautious outside established restaurants and lodges.
  • Zanzibar: Lower malaria risk than the mainland but still present. Don’t skip antimalarials. 
  • Travel insurance: Make sure it covers evacuation, especially if climbing Kilimanjaro.
